World No.1 Novak Djokovic kicked off his 2019 ATP 1000 BNP Paribas Open campaign with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Qualifier
Bjorn Fratangelo in the second round on Saturday.
The five-times champion fought back from a break down to close the opening set 7-6(5) in the tie-breaker. In the second set, Djokovic dominated sealing the win after one hour and 29 minutes.
This was Novak’s 50th match win in Indian Wells, making this his most successful Masters 1000 event in terms of match wins.
“To be honest, I was a bit nervous in the beginning, I didn’t play my best. Credit to Bjorn for coming out firing from every corner. I was lucky to get the first set. After that things went better for me,” Novak said after the match.
In the third round, Novak will take on world no. 39 Philip Kohlschreiber.
